Discussion: Suffering Risks and the Long Reflection

Join our discussion meeting on Thursday, February 16th from 17:30-18:30 in room M3-17B of the McLennan Library on the topic of Suffering Risks and the Long Reflection.

Please read the following to prepare for the discussion:

  1. The Future Might Not Be So Great by Jacy on the EA Forum

  2. The Long Reflection from the EA Forum

  3. The Long Reflection is a Crazy Bad Idea by Robin Hanson on Overcoming Bias

We understand that midterm season is busy, so the follow readings are optional but recommended :

  1. Who is Protecting Animals in the Long Term Future by Alene on the EA Forum

  2. Intergenerational Governance from the Global Priorities Institute

Here are questions to think about:

  • How significant do you think suffering risks are in the long term future?

  • Which instances of suffering should be prioritized if our civilization exists for thousands or billions of years?

  • Do you think it would be wise for humanity to approach determining our long-term value under the long reflection assumption? Are you convinced or unconvinced by Hanson’s criticism?
